I can’t remember the last time I had sore fingertips from playing guitar. Any guitar that gets you to play that much is a win in my book.
Billy White, The Unsung Hero
When Don Dokken went solo 1989, and released his first studio album, the hype was around the well known Europe (The band Europe) guitarist John Norum.
We weren’t ready for the unknown guitarist Billy White, who still basically remains unknown since departing Dokken…more on that in a minute.
When Billy busted out with the solo for this song “Mirror, Mirror” I was immediately blown away with his smooth bluesy style. I wanted to play THAT way. I never tried to learn that solo until I was watching an episode of the YouTube channel Tone Talk with hosts Dave Friedman and Marc Huzansky and one of their guests (Michael Nielsen) mentioned this “Classic” album from my past. I immediately thought of this tune and well….there you have it.
Oh Billy! Where Are YOU!
After his stint with Don Dokken, Billy put out some music under the Billy White Trio name, and then (from my limited research) took a break from music and went on somewhat of a soul searching mission. This business will kill you. I know he is heavily into studying Buddhism and has been playing Flamenco guitar for a while now. I believe he lives somewhere in Mexico and has started doing some sort of “musical healing”. It’s great if anyone can find happiness and while I wish he would shred for us more, we will just have to settle for the memory of his work on this Don Dokken album.
I found this video recently if you are interest in what he’s doing now.
